British Informatics Olympiad

While lesser known, the British Informatics Olympiad (BIO) is much more relevant to computer science. It focuses on algorithmic questions, asking users to provide a working program that solves a problem. Potential CompScis may have heard of the International Olympiad for Informatics, which the BIO is used to select the British team for. The past paper questions on this website are great preparation for interview – I used them myself – although at interview they won’t assume a knowledge of programming. Students should speak to their computing teacher (if they have one – math teacher otherwise) about hosting this at their school, as it’s far less popular of an exam than the UKMT.
