Dr Abdeldjalil Bennecer studied Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Bristol before attending the University of Cambridge, where he graduated with a PhD in 2011. Prior to his appointment as a Senior Lecturer in Engineering at University of Northampton in 2012, he worked as a post-doctoral Research Fellow at Brunel Innovation Centre where he successfully coordinated an FP7 European Project worth €1.5m involving a consortium of 9 partners across 4 countries. He also held a Research Fellow position at Strathclyde University in Glasgow to investigate the use of fibre optic sensors to monitor sonar probes. Since 2016, he has been regularly supervising Engineering Tripos at Homerton College and has been elected a Bye-Fellow in 2020.

His research interests lie in photonic devices and sensors and their application in condition monitoring of critical infrastructure. The primary focus of his research has been on the modelling of photonic sensors for thermographic imaging and advanced non-destructive testing techniques. He has recently developed a particular interest in human factors and intelligent non-destructive inspection using artificial intelligence. He has published a number of articles in the fields of lasers, infrared photodetectors, fibre optic sensors, IoT, condition monitoring of oil and gas pipelines and radiographic imaging.
