Submissions are now being accepted for Homerton College’s 2023 Composing Competition.

The competition is open to all current students at the University of Cambridge. Candidates are asked to submit a piece, up to 5 minutes in length, for aluphone and, if desired, one of the following: trumpet, oboe, or piano.

Homerton College will be receiving the Glennie Concert Aluphone on long-term lease. This instrument will be available to prospective entrants who wish to explore the instrument.

N.B.: Access is strictly by appointment only; please e-mail directorofmusic@homerton.cam.ac.uk at least one week in advance of your requested visit. Listen to Evelyn Glennie introducing the aluphone here.

Candidates should submit their work electronically as a PDF, with an optional accompanying text, to sh816@homerton.cam.ac.uk, by 30 April 2023. The body of the email should state the candidate’s name, subject, degree, and college affiliation clearly, but no identifying information should be visible on the score or text themselves.
The competition will be judged by Dame Evelyn Glennie (Honorary Fellow of Homerton College) and Dr John Hopkins (Emeritus Fellow and former Composer in Residence of Homerton College).

The winning entry will be announced in May 2023, and performed at Homerton College in a concert on 18 June 2023. The winner will receive a prize of £200. One runner-up prize of £50 is also available.

The winning entry is Jack Robinson – (King’s College) for his piece Entropy Bells.
